The Borough
of Avalon is an island community of approximately 2,000 residents. However
from Memorial Day through Labor Day the population swells to approximately
35,000. The police department averages between 40,000 to 50,000 calls for
service each year.
The Avalon Police Department each summer hires twelve Class Two Special
Law Enforcement Officers and four Class One Special Law Enforcement Officers.
The salary for Class Two Officers is $10.00 an hour. Class One Officers
are paid $10.00 an hour. **Minimum wage is paid while attending the police
academy.
Class Two Officers are generally assigned to one of four capacities: Motorized
patrol, bicycle patrol, noise enforcement patrol and marine patrol.
Class One Officers are used to enforce parking violations.
Many of our full time officers previously served as Special Officers with
our department, however, this is neither a policy nor a prerequisite for
full-time employment. A great percentage of our Special Law Enforcement
Officers do go on to become full-time officers with other departments in
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
The Avalon Police Department is not a civil service (N.J. Department of Personnel) department and we test our own applicants using the New Jersey Chiefs of Police Association testing procedures. Applicants must be 18 years of age, possess a high school degree, a valid New Jersey Drivers License and reside in the State of New Jersey.
Please contact Captain David P. Dean at (609) 967-3411 for information on employment opportunities as a SLEO Class I, SLEO Class II, or full-time officer with the Avalon Police Department.
