9-1-1 Telecommunicator
This is a 40-hour Basic Telecommunicator Course that is required of all call takers. Telecommunicators will be instructed on the basic information required to dispatch calls for law enforcement, fire and EMS services. NCI or APCO Certification received upon successful completion

Active Shooter Response
This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s office and is designed to instruct the police officer who is the first responder on the proper procedures to an active shooter call, to ensure his safety and that of all the persons involved at an active shooter call. The class will consist of both classroom and tactical hands on instruction on proper approaches and containment procedures. Class times are 12pm – 8:30pm

Advanced Interview and Interrogation (FBI)
This two day course is designed for the experienced investigators and will cover the following areas: preparing for an interview, the background interview, Miranda Warnings, non-verbal behavior, verbal behavior, the behavior analysis interview, and the nine step interrogation method.

ATV Operator Certification
This course is open to all police, beach patrol and emergency personnel. Topics include introduction to safety awareness, preparing to ride and getting familiar with your ATV, starting your ATV, riding strategies, turning, quick stops and swerving, riding over obstacles, riding on hills, and safe handling practices.

Residential Basic Course for Police Officers
The Basic Course for Police Officers consists of 840 hours of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This includes over 98 hours of physical fitness, 64 hours of firearms training, 40 hours of injury crash management, and over 638 hours of academic instruction and practical exercises. The academy also employs simmunition handgun/weapon training, boxing, and will additionally certify recruits in Red Cross Community Water Rescue, CPR, AED and Radar. Applicants must be sworn, full-time employees of a municipal, county, state institution, or qualified alternate route candidates and conform to all standards prescribed by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Periodic drug screening of all trainees is conducted during this course. Confirmation of drugs in the trainee’s urine will result in immediate dismissal.
This residential program has been extremely well received. The program offers meals and lodging, a computer room for use by the recruits (recruits are issued computer laptops during training) and have the option of taking additional courses at night on their own through the Law Enforcement Training Network. Cape May County Citizens Police Academy
These informational classes are designed to provide an opportunity for the class attendee to gain a clearer perspective of law enforcement. Equally important, law enforcement can gain knowledge of the needs of the very citizens we represent. This course is instructed by various Chiefs of Police from Cape May County. Program topics include: Overview of the Criminal Justice System, Police Training Requirements, The Police Mission, Budget/Manpower, Communications, Criminal/Juvenile Law, Crime Prevention and Crime Scenes, Traffic Related Activities, Use of Force, K-9 Usage, Domestic Violence, and Community Policing.

Drug Recognition / Drug Laws for the Patrol Officer
This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and is a four (4) hour course that is designed for the uniform patrol officer and covers the CDS Act and drug identification/recognition, concealment, packaging and handling.

DWI Detection / Standardized Field Sobriety Tests
This five day course is being presented by the New Jersey State Police – the student will be trained in the administration of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests including Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). The tests are endorsed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Included in the blocks of instruction are alcohol workshops with live subjects, physiology of alcohol in the human body, case trial preparation, and drugs that impair driving.

Emergency Medical Dispatcher
The 32-hour Emergency Medical Dispatcher Course is required of all call takers. This course is designed to effectively direct and manage their emergency medical resources. This course primarily focuses on the medical side of dispatching. Completion of this class carries 21 continuing education units for EMT’s.

Ethics for the Police Executive (FBI)
This is a two day course to give an individual with the rank of lieutenant or higher the training tools for developing ethical decision making skills both in themselves and their fellow officers. It focuses on choices and decisions that officers are confronted with on a daily basis and is a key ingredient in developing and maintaining an ethical climate within any police agency. Topics will include the state of American society. Ethics as philosophy, basic ethics, ethical decision making in actual field situations, ethical choices, adult training and instructional techniques refresher and a practical exercise in a scenario format.

Firearms Instructor
This course is designed to instruct department personnel who will be assigned the task of instructing and certifying officers in the use and care of firearms. Subjects include instruction in methodology, firearms policy, testing and operation of a firearm range. The officer must fire ONE score of at least 95% on the regular handgun qualification course to enter the program. Officers will be required to furnish their duty weapon, shotgun and ammunition. New Jersey Police Training Commission approved course.
Equipment requirements: Department firearms policy, duty semi-automatic handgun, 12 gauge shotgun, flash light, rain gear.
Ammunition requirements: 1400 rounds duty or equivilent for duty weapon, 50 rounds revolver ammunition, 50 rounds 12 gauge fine shot, 30 rounds 12 gauge 00 buckshot, 30 rounds 12 gauge slug

Investigative Photography and Videotaping
This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. This two (2) day course is designed to prepare the crime scene investigator in the filming and photography of a crime scene. The procedures necessary for a complete and thorough recording of a crime scene will be discussed and demonstrated. Preparing for proper courtroom presentations will also be discussed. Students will have hands-on practical experience on filming and photography and preparing for courtroom presentation.

Methods of Instruction
The New Jersey Police Training Commission approved course is designed for individuals who plan to teach at police schools and/or their respective departments. This course covers selecting methods, establishing goals and performance objectives, constructing lesson plans, testing and evaluation, psychology of learning, effective speaking, principals of learning, use of training aids and instruction on Microsoft Power Point for presentations. The student will be required to deliver a 10, 20, and 45 minute presentation complete with lesson plans. The 20-minute lesson plan will be videotaped and reviewed by an instructor with the student.

Physical Fitness Instructor
This 40–hour, Police Training Commission accredited course prepares an officer to gain certification as a physical training instructor. Students will learn the implementation of the Police Training Commission Physical Conditioning Program. Search Warrant and Consensual Interception
This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office in a four (4) hour session. This course will explore the proper procedures of applying for the drafting and the use of search warrants and consensual interceptions for various police investigations. Use of witnesses and informants will be discussed as well as preparing for courtroom testimony. All students will prepare a search warrant and/or a consensual interception application based on a mock scenario assigned to them.

SLEO Class I
The Special Officer Class I is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. This 80-hour course provides training in PR-24, handcuffing, defensive tactics, disorderly persons offences, first aid, use of force, various patrol concepts, and ethics. Upon graduation, the student will be a PTC certified Class One Special Officer.

SLEO Class II
The Special Officer Class II consists of over 459 hours of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This course covers similar material as the basic class. There are two programs offered. The winter class begins in December and goes through May. These classes are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening from 5:00PM to 10:00PM and all day Saturday. The summer training class is offered from May until the end of June and is seven and one half weeks. The course runs six days per week 7:00AM to 5:00PM from Monday through Saturday. Upon graduation, students will be PTC certified as a Class Two Special Officer.

Spanish for Law Enforcement
This five day course taught by the Federal Bureau of Investigation is designed for patrol and investigative officers who interact with Spanish speaking individuals. Basic commands and terminology utilized in the course of police business will be the focus.

This course being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is a three (3) day course that is a continuing education course for the investigator/detective. Course topics include, basic crime scene photography, advanced latent fingerprint development including blood print development, use of alternate light sources, interviewing and interrogation, videotaped statements, and advanced search warrant preparation.

Basic Drill Instructor Course
This three (3) day course will provide students with instruction on performing basic military movements used at the academy setting and funerals. The instructor will provide insight into the history of military drill and the techniques of giving commands and individual movements. Specifically, students will learn the preparatory command, command of execution, position of attention, parade rest, hand salute, facing movements, forming and drilling a class or group, marching a class or group, halting while marching, executing a column right with four squads, and much more.

Basic Investigator / Detective Course
This course being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is a comprehensive three (3) day course that is designed for the new investigator/detective. Course topics include safeguarding and processing the crime scene, latent fingerprint development, proper evidence handling and submission, basic interviewing and taking of statements, photo line-up procedures, introduction to search warrant preparation, and use of and preparing consensual interceptions.

Basic SWAT
This is a physically intense two week course that will include long hours under arduous conditions. Course requirements and participation will include working at heights and strenuous physical training. Candidates will be required to pass a physical performance test prior to entering the program. Areas of training will include: Individual and Team Movements; Firing of duty handguns and specialty weapons; Chemical Agents; Distraction Devices; Operation of Ballistic Resistant Equipment; Night Operations; Intelligence Gathering and Physical Fitness. Candidates who do not perform to an acceptable level may be asked to leave the program prior to its conclusion.

Courtroom Testimony
This course being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is a (4) hour course that is designed to prepare the patrol officer and detective for testifying in NJ Superior Court. Miranda, suppression and trial testimony will be discussed and how to avoid mistakes and pitfalls.

Crash Investigation One (NJSP)
This course is designed to give patrol officers with little or no formal training in accident investigation better insight into proper interpretation and gathering of physical evidence at a motor vehicle collision. The course will teach the student the proper techniques for recognizing and properly gathering critical evidence that may be used to reconstruct a crash at a later date. Officers will learn how to make measurements, sketches, after accident diagrams, and properly photograph the scene.

Identifying Warning Signs of School Violence (FBI)
This one day training provides information for law enforcement and school administration personnel, as well as mental health professionals who may be tasked with responding to threatening situations in school environments. The focus of this training is the identification, assessment and management of potential threats. This is not an “active shooter” response course.

Interview and Interrogation
This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. This two (2) day course of instruction will enable the detective, investigator or officer about to assume this position, to differentiate between behavioral symptoms of both the truthful and deceptive person. They will understand the significance of verbal and non-verbal communication when dealing with victims, witnesses and suspects. This course will focus on critical aspects of the interview process, Miranda concerns and practical solutions to legal questions that arise during the interview processes.

Sex Crimes Investigation
This course being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is a two (2) day course demonstrating the practices and procedures in the investigation of sexual assault, molestation, etc. A few of the topics discussed will be awareness of the psychological as well as the physical effects of victims, evidence for prosecution of offenders, interview and interrogation techniques, as well as preparing for court testimony.

Leadership and Supervision (FBI)
This five day course is designed for individuals with the rank of lieutenant or higher and will include an examination of various leadership styles and the role power can play in leadership. Also included are DISC behavior assessments and Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership II Model. Other possible topics include media relations, generations, and ethics. All blocks of instruction will be tailored for the police executive. This will be a dynamic, interactive course with practical exercises and self examination tools.
