Besides being taught the fundementals of basic marksmanship, the recruits are trained in advanced survival shooting skills through a series of live fire drills on the police range. Addiitonally the academy trains the recruit with a firearms simulator (FATS) and with the Dual-a-Tron training system. The academy was first in the state to introduce "Simmunition" training into the basic class. The academy ran the initial training program for the New Jersey Police Training Commission and recieved certification to continue with the program. Presently the academy is one of two in the state permitted to train with this equipment. The training is realistic and duty weapons (handguns, shotguns, submachine guns) are converted over to shoot paint ammunition. The training is very intense and realistic. The academy is also proud to have on it's firearms staff the United States Women's Skeet shooting champion. She also captained the United States Team that won the world championship in France this past year.
